FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Melvin Lee Walter Jr., 85, of Fayetteville, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 28, 1923, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Melvin L. Walter Sr. and Margaret E. Tripp Walter.

His wife, Rose Grammer Walter, died in 2004.

He was the former owner and operator of Lee Automotive in Fayetteville.

A Disabled American Veteran, he was a prisoner of war in Africa, Italy and Germany while serving with the U.S. Army in World War II.


He is survived by his children, Sandra Smith of Glen Burnie, Md., and Melvin Walter III, Margaret Kendall and Jay Walter, all of Fayetteville, Carson Walter of Shippensburg, Pa., and Ann Walter of Harrisburg, Pa.; two sisters, Dorothy White and June Rigatuso, both of Fayetteville; two brothers, George and Ray Walter, both of Maryland; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Theresa L. Walter; three sisters, Helen, Pearl and Naomi; and one brother, Buddy.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, where Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201; or to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
