Car fire intentionally set, says fire marshal

March 30, 2009

KNOXVILLE, Md. -- Someone apparently set fire to a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier on Sunday night in the Knoxville area, Deputy Maryland State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst said.

The car was destroyed by the fire, Ernst said.

A passerby who reported the fire said she saw a vehicle with Pennsylvania license plates leaving the area, Ernst said.

The fire occurred at about 10:25 p.m. in the 700 block of Harpers Ferry Road, Ernst said.

The Potomac Valley Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the fire, he said. It was controlled within 10 minutes.

Investigation showed someone ignited the interior rear seats, Ernst said.

Damage was estimated at $5,000, he said.
