Principal dons Ravens jersey, mohawk in attendance challenge

March 30, 2009

Conococheague Elementary School Principal Ryan Hench came through on his part of an attendance incentive challenge with his students recently.

He donned a Baltimore Ravens jersey, purple and gold accessories, while sporting a purple mohawk, despite his longtime allegiance to the Super Bowl winning Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hench challenged the students to keep attendance above 96 percent during MSA testing. They were up for the challenge, averaging 97.8 percent for the week of March 16 and recording a near-perfect 99.7 percent on March 18.

Hench admitted the Ravens part of the deal was a tough pill to swallow for a Steelers fan, but said it was worth it.

"We've been using a combination of strategies to build our attendance numbers and this was a fun way to do it. When the kids believe it's fun and exciting to come to school every day, it creates a productive learning environment for the teachers and students," Hench said.
