WILSON, Md. - John Ernest Grove, age 79, of Cedar Ridge Road, Williamsport, Md., went to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 28, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born Feb. 10, 1930, in Clear Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Ernest Lewis Grove and Hannah Susan Shank Grove.

He was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Reformed Church of Clear Spring, joining in 1947, and was baptized on July 6, 1930.


He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He retired after 40 years of service from Supreme Concrete Block Company of Hagerstown. He helped to construct, maintain and was employed for over 40 years at the Hagerstown Speedway. He was a self-employed auctioneer and a figure caller for square dancing.

He was a chartered continuous member of the Wilson Ruritan Club and also a life member of the club. He was a honorary life member of the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company and was a member of the Clear Spring Ambulance Company. He was a member of the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring, the Mercersburg Moose Lodge and the Williamsport Redmen Lodge.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Elizabeth Robinson Grove of Williamsport; one daughter, Bette Mae Lee and husband, Gerald, of Hagerstown; two sons, Randy W. Grove and wife, Nancy, of Williamsport, and Royce (Butch) E. Robinson and wife, Ellie, of Clear Spring; two sisters, Faye Shank and Barbara Shank, both of Maugansville; two brothers, Daniel Grove of Leitersburg and Clyde Grove of Maugansville; five grandchildren, Lynda Murray, Royal Robinson, Julie Timmons, Nan Guthrie and Andy Lee; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Grove and Ernest "Hub" Grove.

Services will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Reformed Church, Clear Spring. Pastor John A. Toms will officiate. Burial will be in Little Rose Hill Cemetery of Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. You may visit the funeral home after noon.
