HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Myrtle Jane Makara, 93, of Hedgesville, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at the home of her granddaughter under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born Sept. 28, 1915, in Susquehanna County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wirtie H. and Jessie Leona Brooks Bacon.

She went to school in Arlington County, Va., and was one of the last surviving members of Washington & Lee's class of 1934.


She and her husband, Martin W. Varner, now deceased, owned and operated several automobile service stations in Arlington County.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn A. Blaylock; two grandchildren, Jeanie A. Blaylock and Martin R. Blaylock; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three husbands; two sisters; and one brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va. The Rev. Jim Bishop and Pastor Dennis Rhoe will officiate. Burial will be in Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
