Kinsey Shifflett wins Lions' essay contest

March 29, 2009

Lions Clubs of District 22-W had the opportunity to promote Americanism in their communities by sponsoring an American Heritage Essay Contest.

There were five categories in which to participate.

Elementary grades, middle school, high school, post high school - nonLions and Lions - and Lionesses. Each category had a specific topic on which to write.

Kinsey Shifflett, an eighth-grader from Smithsburg Middle School, was the middle school division winner from the Smithsburg Lions Club.

Middle school students wrote about "What the American Flag Means to Me."

On Feb. 25, Kinsey and her family attended the Smithsburg Lions meeting at the Mountaingate Restaurant. After dinner, Kinsey read her essay to the members of the club. Lions President Jack Wenthe presented Kinsey with a certificate of accomplishment. Kinsey's essay was submitted for consideration in District 22-W.

District 22-W has Lions Clubs in Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Frederick and Carroll counties.
