Abigail Jones, a fifth-grader at Boonsboro Elementary School and Margaret Manspeaker, an eighth-grader at Northern Middle School, have been named Carson Scholars.

They have been invited to an awards banquet Sunday, April 26, at Martin's West in Baltimore, where they will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Longtime newscaster/anchorman Sam Donaldson will serve as master of ceremonies. Honored guests will include Gen. and Mrs. Colin Powell and former NFL running back Jerome Bettis.

A pair of three-student teams from Boonsboro High School will compete in the National Japan Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 2 and 3.


One team is captained by Danielle Dreflinger, who is joined by Matt Carlos Ingram and Dale Weaver. The second team is comprised of captain Madeline Webber, Sarah Ball and Taylor Calandrelle.

The 17th Japan Bowl will welcome 170 students from as far away as Guam.

In the Washington County Public Schools system, Japanese is only offered at Boonsboro, taught by Ayako Shiga.

The competition tests the students' skills in Japanese and their knowledge of Japanese history, society and culture.

The event is an official part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Tracy Hinkle of Hagerstown is among 25 Bridgewater College seniors who have been selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."

Hinkle, a 2005 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, is the daughter of Cindy Hinkle of Hagerstown and the late John Hinkle II.

She is majoring in sociology and has a minor in business administration and social work.

She is a four-year member and head of Sweet Sixteen, a group of students who serve as hosts at home football and basketball games. She is a a member of the Outdoorsmen Club and participates in the intramural program.

She is a student in the Department of Athletics.

Last summer, Hinkle completed an internship in the foster care unit at Washington County Department of Social Services. Last fall, she did an internship with Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Harrisonburg, Va. She also serves as a mentor for a "little brother."

As a freshman, Hinkle participated in the Race to Beat Cancer 5K Run and 10K Run, sponsored by Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation. She was a member of Habitat for Humanity her first two years in college and served on the entertainment committee for Relay for Life as a junior.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - William B. Stouffer of Smithsburg has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Hartford.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Timothy Marriner of Hagerstown has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

He is a junior majoring in software engineering.

He is the son of Timothy and Tammy Marriner of Hagerstown.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A number of area students were named to the Wilson College dean's list for the fall semester.

To earn a place on the list, a student must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Zack Clopper of Boonsboro has earned dean's list honors for the fall semester at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College.

He is majoring in automotive technology.

Zack also was accepted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

He is a 2008 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

Zack is the son of Gregg and Sherrie Ellsworth of Boonsboro and Jeff Clopper of Smithsburg.

ALBANY, N.Y. - Barbara J. Zullinger of Chambersburg, Pa., has earned an associate in science in nursing from Excelsior College.
