Fountaindale Elementary dad volunteer gains state recognition

March 26, 2009

Steven O'Farrell is Washington County's nominee in the 2009 Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards program.

O'Farrell is the father of a Fountaindale Elementary School student and began an effort to make improvements to the school's courtyard area in spring 2008.

He will be joined by nominees from Maryland's 23 other school systems at the Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards celebration May 8 in Baltimore.

Comcast partnered with the Maryland State Department of Education to create a statewide parent volunteer awards initiative.

Larry Walker of Howard County was named the first state winner of the Parent Involvement Matters Award in 2008. Kristy Sollenberger, a Bester Elementary School volunteer, was Washington County's nominee last year.

O'Farrell has been thorough in his work on the courtyard project, gaining feedback from school staff, meeting with school system, City of Hagerstown and state officials to discuss design issues, and enlisting an architect who donated his time to design the project.

Fountaindale PTA President Kristin Bezanson, in nominating O'Farrell, said, "Steve's perseverance on this project is a testament to his commitment to improving the student life at Fountaindale."
