CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Eli S. "Gig" Fowler Jr., 84, of 4 Dorset Court, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at his home.

Born April 7, 1924, in Jackson, Miss., he was the son of the late Eli S. and Hazel B. McDowell Fowler.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving as a B-17 pilot during World War II, and also served in the Korean War during his 20 years of military service.


He was employed as an engineer working on Department of Defense contracts for the Illinois Institute of Technology.

He was a member of 351st Bomb Group Association, 8th Air Force Historical Society Inc., The American Air Museum of Britain, Air Force Museum Foundation and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Joan K. Graves Fowler, whom he married Aug. 7, 1944; four children, Eli S. Fowler III of Spokane, Wash., Melinda J. Stenger of Chambersburg, Robin A. Fowler of Halethorpe, Md., and Kevin S. Fowler of Finksburg, Md.; four grandchildren; and two sisters, Elise Roberts of Houston and Hazel Nanny of Spartanburg, S.C.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Richard Randall will officiate. Burial with military honors by members of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Lincoln Cemetery.

There will be no visitation prior to the service. However, friends and family are welcome to gather at the Fowler home following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Home Care and Hospice, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
