Scholarship offered to area high school seniors

The Western Maryland Chapter of the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC) has announced its 14th annual scholarship award. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a deserving student majoring in financial management. Washington County and Frederick County high school seniors will be considered.

Application forms and scholarship packages showing the guidelines for recognition and evaluation of each scholar are available at each area high school, and at both the Washington County and Frederick County boards of education. Packages may also be obtained by contacting Karen Wolff at 301-619-6194, or by writing to ASMC, P.O. Box 1906, Frederick MD 21702-0906.

Applications should be mailed to ASMC, and postmarked by April 17, 2009.

Deadline nears for annual library poetry contest

The Washington County Free Library is calling all creative people in Washington County to wield their pens and enter a poem in the 11th annual Washington County Poetry Contest.


Poems may be submitted to the library anytime through Tuesday, March 31. Hand deliver your poem to the children's department or send entries to: Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, MD 21740, attention: poetry contest.

Include on your typed or legibly written poem your name, address, telephone number, and age division. The age divisions are: grades two and three; grades four and five; grades six through eight; grades nine through 12 and adult.

To enter your poem in the contest, you must live in Washington County.

Poems must be original work and may be in any style and no longer than one page in length.

Poetry contest winners will be announced on Thursday, April 23 -- the 445th anniversary of William Shakespeare's birthday. Winning poems will be displayed at the library. A reception will be held to honor the poets by presenting them with a volume of poetry, and having them read their winning poems aloud.

At the reception, a book of poetry will be awarded for the first- and second-place winning entries in each division, with honorable mention certificates awarded for third place.

Women's Club accepting scholarship applications

Hagerstown & Professional Women's Club is accepting scholarship applications from 2008 high school seniors from local high schools. Scholarships are awarded based on scholastic achievement, community involvement and financial need. Applications must be returned by Wednesday, April 1.
