Preps Area Roundup -- Clear Spring topples Brunswick

CLEAR SPRING -- Brandon Glazer scored from third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie as Clear Spring improved to 2-0 (2-0 MVAL Antietam) with a 4-1 win over Brunswick on Monday.

Josh Green followed with a two-run double. He finished with two of the Blazers' five hits. Jordan Thurber (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the win.

Austin Darling had two hits and an RBI for Brunswick (0-1).

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Nathan Kauffman went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Jesse Mowen pitched a five-hit shutout as Waynesboro won in five innings.

Cody Bumbaugh and Jonathan Blubaugh each had two hits for the Indians (2-0). One of Bumbaugh's hits was a triple.

BOONSBORO -- Catoctin jumped to an early 4-1 lead and held on for an MVAL Antietam win over Boonsboro (0-2, 0-2), whICH left the bases loaded in two situations without scoring.

The Warriors closed the gap in the seventh inning before Catoctin (2-0, 2-0) shut the door.

Seth Poffenberger went the first 5 1/2 innings with the loss and also had two hits, four stolen bases and a run batted in. Rodney Flora had two hits, including a double.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Greencastle broke out with a 10-run first inning to give new coach Jeremy Barnes his first win in the season opener.

Eric Schanzenbacher started the game with a solo home run and he added three more hits as the Blue Devils totaled 20. Grant Meyers, Alex Izer and Trevor Ile each had three hits and Cole Sellers, Denton Ensminger and Jared Doyle each had two. Ile had a two-run home run in the second inning.

CLEAR SPRING -- Hannah Leizear hit a two-run double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Clear Spring to the MVAL Antietam victory.

Leizear finished with two hits, both doubles. D.J. McDonough (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief for the Blazers (2-0, 2-0).

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg picked up its first win of the campaign with a whitewashing of Hancock as three pitchers combined for a no-hitter.

Bethany Garnand went three innings with eight strikeouts and was followed by Shaila Murray and Paige Decker.

Emily Bolton had two hits for Smithsburg (1-1).

GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Greencastle opened the season with Rochelle Christman's bat booming.

Christman rapped a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run dinger in the third and added another RBI single to pace the Blue Devils. Katie Bobbitt and Wendy Wolff each had two RBIs.

Autumn Appleby allowed only one hit, an unearned run and struck out nine and Rachel Kline finished up with three strikeouts.

BOONSBORO -- Haley Payne had three hits and two RBIs and Courtney Alves had two hits and three RBIs to lead Boonsboro to the MVAL Antietam win.

Lauren Abbott added two hits for the Warriors (1-1, 1-1).

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Katie Zak tossed a two-hitter and had plenty of run support as the Maidens (2-0) finished off James Buchanan with a seven-run fourth inning.

Megan Baker and Amanda Gray each a had a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Baker and Dani Miller each had two hits in the game.

Zak struck out seven and walked none.
