March 24, 2009

The Washington County Intermediate Horse Bowl team placed second at the University of Maryland State Horse Bowl March 7.

"I can't believe we made it this far," team captain Mark Johnson said as the final-round began in the double-elimination tournament.

Their second-place finish against the reigning champions was capped off by the announcement that three team members had placed in the top 10 for individual scores.

Kristen Shives of Bits and Bridles 4-H Club placed third in the individual rankings, and Saddles 'n' Spurs members Lilli Sutton and Mariah Chapelle placed fourth and and fifth, respectively.

The excitement continued when after a sixth-place finish, the Washington County senior team of Jessie Stein, Zoe Chapelle, Katie Boring, Edward Holland, Devyn Bellerive and Julia Eckstine found that two of their members had qualified to compete for a spot on the national team.

Zoe Chapelle of Saddles 'n' Spurs placed third in the individual rankings and Jessie Stein of Red Ribbon 4-H Club placed 13th. These two horse bowlers will continue to work with their coach, Katrin Boniface, as well as the state horse bowl coaches in their bid for one of four spots next November to defend Maryland's national title in Lexington, Ky.

Washington County's Junior team coached by Lori Bellerive and captained by Jacob Lessinger, consisted of Sophia Bartell, Chloe Bellerive, Ocoee Chapelle and Dan Selders. With an eighth-place finish, the youngsters are set to return next year to have their horsemanship knowledge tested once again.
