The 26th annual Mathcounts competition was held Feb. 28 at E. Russell Hicks Middle School.
Sixty sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from Allegany and Washington county middle schools competed in the event, sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The local program is staffed by volunteers from the Hagerstown chapter.
The Mathcounts program consists of chapter, state and national competitions fostering math enrichment to enhance achievement in middle school mathematics.
Breakfast refreshments, trophy awards and souvenirs are donated by the Hagerstown Professional Engineers Corp. and local engineering companies.
Results are as follows:
Team competition: First place, Boonsboro Middle School, Washington County; second place, Braddock Middle School, Allegany County; third place, Northern Middle School, Washington County; fourth place, E. Russell Hicks Middle School, Washington County; fifth place, Bishop Walsh Middle School, Allegany County.
Individual results: First place, Orin Kuehl, Boonsboro; second place, Mike Fraley, Braddock; third place, Elizabeth Slick, Boonsboro; fourth place, Richard Shin, Braddock; fifth place, Chad Cowden, Boonsboro; sixth place, Sebastian Walton, Boonsboro.
