CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Paul G. Swope, 88, a resident of the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of 5643 Third St., Marion, Pa., died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 17, 1920, in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of the late Earl G. and Florence E. Shatzer Swope.

His wife, Alice K. Goetz Swope, died Dec. 13, 2004. They were married July 6, 1940.

He was a machinist employed for 25 years at the former Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, retiring in 1984.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Rescue Hose Co. 1, Greencastle, and Marion Volunteer Fire Co., where he served with the Fire Police Unit; a member of the former Junior Order (JOUAM) of Marion; Pennsylvania State Fire Police Association; and Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 631 in Greencastle.


He is survived by four sons, Robert L. Swope of Arlington, Texas, Thomas H. Swope and Garry L. Swope, both of Chambersburg, and Theodore G. Swope of Marion; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Swope; one son, George E. Swope; and two brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle. The Rev. Chris Renner will officiate. Burial with military honors by Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where Greencastle VFW will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
