Tractor-trailer crash closes ramp to I-70

March 23, 2009

The ramp from southbound Md. 63 to westbound Interstate 70 west of Hagerstown was closed Monday afternoon and evening following a tractor-trailer accident, Maryland State Police said.

At about 11:15 a.m., a tractor-trailer carrying 42,000 pounds of paper products entered the ramp at a speed that caused the load to shift and the vehicle to overturn, police said.

The ramp was closed at 12:15 p.m. so the truck's cargo could be off-loaded.

A detour was started at 2 p.m. and affected traffic was being directed onto I-70 eastbound toward other ramps that would get them back onto the westbound lanes of the interstate. The ramp was reopened as of 7:45 p.m., state police said.

The truck's driver, identified as Dewayne K. McCoy from Ohio, was not injured, police said.
