Paramount church marks 40 years

March 22, 2009

Members of Paramount Brethren in Christ Church celebrated the church's 40th anniversary with a balloon launch on Sunday.

In 1968, a group of Brethren in Christ members began meeting in a basement of a house on Longmeadow Road with the Rev. Ralph Wenger, a Brethren in Christ pastor from Franklin County, Pa., who was hoping to establish a church in Washington County.

The next year, 2 acres of land a few doors down were purchased from the Horst family, which had a big farm there. The main church building was constructed in 1969, followed a few years later by the social hall.

"On Sunday mornings, you could still hear the farm sounds coming from behind the church," said Pastor Jim Stauffer of those early days. Stauffer is the third pastor of the congregation since 1969.
