Hancock 20-17, Ferndale 18-1

HANCOCK -- Kaitlyn Sterner picked up two victories, including a no-hitter, and Shawnda Wills had six hits, three RBIs and four runs scored as Hancock opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Ferndale (Pa.).

Sterner held Ferndale without a hit and struck out six in the nightcap after locking down the opening win in relief.

Hayley Ruppenthal and Brittany Moats had four hits and four runs in the opener, while Wills had three hits and four runs. Georgia Manning drove in four runs, including a two-run double.

Karly Logsdon had four hits and four runs in the nightcap, while Wills added three hits and three RBIs for the Panthers (2-0).

Hedgesville 9-9, Goretti 6-0

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Hedgesville swept St. Maria Goretti as it jumped to a 4-0 lead in both games of the doubleheader.

Jess Shirley struck out 13 for Hedgesville (2-1) in the opener and Sam Nazelrod had two hits. Caroline Rosenthal struck out eight for Goretti (1-3) and Colleen McCauley had three hits.

Britt Boarman, Shirley and Hillary Ware each had two hits for Hedgesville in the nightcap. One of Ware's hits was a bases-loaded triple.

Rosenthal struck out 10 batters, Emily Steiner collected three hits and Brenna Edmonds had two for Goretti.

Ferndale 8-3, Hancock 3-7

HANCOCK -- Logan True and Lucas Trunkle each drove in runs in a three-run third inning to lift Hancock to a split in a season-opening doubleheader against Ferndale (Pa.).

True had one of his two hits in the inning as the Panthers (1-1) took a 4-1 lead. Ben Hoopengardener added two hits and an RBI in the win.

Josh Smith and Eli Souders combined on a four-hit victory with nine strikeouts.

In the opener, Ferndale blew open a 2-1 game with a six-run seventh inning to put away the victory.

Nick Lanehart pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Panthers, allowing four hits while striking out three. Hoopengardener had an RBI single in Hancock's two-run seventh.

Patrick Lewis started and picked up the victory with five strikeouts and Colin Lyons finished up with four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.
