Lions variety show this weekend

March 20, 2009

CLEAR SPRING -- The Clear Spring Lions Club's 58th variety show will be performed Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Clear Spring High School.

"Lions On The Silver Screen" is the theme of this year's show, with music and skits performed by members in this club's largest fundraiser of the year.

A soundtrack medley will blend with a number of well-known songs such as "Let's Go To The Movies," "Puttin' On The Ritz" and "Footloose," as well as hits from the 1950s, 1960s and beyond.

The show also will feature skits.

Burma Miles is the director of this year's show. Music will feature Allison Kriner on keyboard, W.T. Fleming on rhythm guitar, Tyler Funk on drums, Angela Miles on flute and Dan Fleming on saxophone.

Fleming is emcee for the 23rd year in a row. Lion Tom Knode -- with 41 years experience with the program -- heads the entertainers.

The Tri-State Stage Band will provide pre-show entertainment a half-hour before each show.

The show's proceeds support projects such as scholarship awards, eye examinations and eyeglasses for needy children, Girl and Boy Scout programs, Little League baseball, youth soccer, Destination Imagination, athletic awards, American Heritage essay contest awards, the Clear Spring library, and funds for Clear Spring fire and ambulance companies.

Also receiving support are the Lions Club's community food bank, Maryland Eye Bank, the leader dog program, hospital equipment and diabetes screenings.

Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for children, while preschoolers are admitted free. Tickets are available at Clear Spring Hardware, the Sunrise Handi Mart at Saint Paul Road or from any Clear Spring Lion or cast member. Tickets also will be available at the door.
