Funkstown fire sends 3 to hospital

March 20, 2009

FUNKSTOWN -- A woman and two young children were taken to Washington County Hospital Friday after they were injured in a kitchen fire at 109 E. Baltimore St. in Funkstown, Funkstown Fire Capt. Eric Fraley said.

The extent of the injuries and the identities of the woman and the children, ages 1 and 3, were unknown as of 9:45 p.m., Fraley said.

Fraley said the fire started about 6 p.m. while the woman was cooking.

"We determined (the cause) was food on the stove," Fraley said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to control the fire, which was contained to the kitchen, Fraley said.

Fraley said some of the kitchen cabinets were damaged.

Firefighters from Funkstown, Hagerstown and Halfway responded to the scene. Community Rescue Service and Washington County Emergency Services also assisted.
