Stretch of I-70 closed in Frederick Co.

March 19, 2009

FREDERICK -- A tractor-trailer fire late Thursday morning shut down all but one lane of eastbound Interstate 70 at the 49-mile marker near Alternate U.S. 40 and Middletown, Md., Maryland State Police said.

Expectations are that those lanes will remain closed until mid-afternoon as equipment is taken in to remove the vehicle from the road.

While eastbound traffic is moving slowly through the area in that one lane, most traffic is being diverted onto Alternate U.S. 40, police said.

Westbound traffic was unaffected except for the usual slowdown as travelers pass by the fire scene, police said.

The fire was reported at 11:28 a.m. If all goes as planned, the road could be reopened as early as 3 p.m., police said.
