CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A pretrial hearing scheduled for Monday in the case against Scott Nathan North was delayed to allow prosecutors and defense attorneys more time to hammer out a plea agreement.

North, of Chambersburg, was charged in the August 2006 beating death of his former employer, Carl Ryder, of Amberson, Pa.

The hearing Monday was scheduled to allow Carlisle, Pa., defense attorneys John Abom and Ari Weitzman an opportunity to file motions to suppress evidence. However, they joined Franklin County District Attorney John Nelson in telling Judge Douglas W. Herman that a plea agreement is being negotiated.

Herman asked that he review any tentative plea agreement on April 6.

"The court wanted more information about it," Nelson said.

North walked away from a Franklin County Prison work-release assignment Aug. 2, 2006. Pennsylvania State Police took North into custody Aug. 11, 2006, and found Ryder's body in Huntingdon County, Pa., on Aug. 16, 2006.
