FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Ralph Julius Straley Sr., 73, of Fayetteville, and formerly of Hershey, Pa., died Friday, March 13, 2009, at his home.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Charles Straley and Irene Kline Straley.

He was a graduate of Wilkinsburg High School and Westminster College, where he played basketball.

For more than 39 years, he was self-employed in the commercial construction business in southcentral Pennsylvania with his partner, the late Charles Beard.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and later as an officer on active duty after graduating from college.

He was an avid golfer and won numerous awards.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alvira Nelson Whitley Straley of Fayetteville; one daughter, Cynthia A. Straley of Boston; one son, Ralph J. Straley Jr.; one granddaughter; and several cousins.


He was preceded in death by one daughter, Catherine I. Straley; and one cousin.

A memorial service will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Lebanon County, Pa., where he will be interred with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey HealthCare of Harrisburg, 4660 Trindle Road, Suite 204, Camp Hill, PA 17011; or to a charity of one's choice.
