March 16, 2009|By TRISH RUDDER

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Free prescription drug discount cards are available for Morgan County residents.

The cards are available at the commission and county clerk offices, magistrate and family court, Extension office, War Memorial Hospital, Senior Life Services, Health Department, DHHR, Starting Points and the Warm Springs Public Service office in Berkeley Springs, according to a press release.

In Paw Paw (W.Va.), the cards will be available at the Senior Life Services and Mountaineer Health Center on Wednesday, said Bette Kidwell at the commission office.

The nationwide program is sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and offers an average savings of 22 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs, according to the press release.

The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage, and are accepted at Reed's and Rite Aid pharmacies. A national network of more than 59,000 participating retail pharmacies also will honor the NACo prescription discount card, according to the release.

"The NACo prescription discount card offers significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured residents of our county, and even those fortunate enough to have prescription coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan," said Brenda J. Hutchinson, Morgan County Commission president. "Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program. Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card at any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance."

There is no cost to county taxpayers for NACo or for Morgan County to make the money-saving cards available, the press release said.
