Shirk 8th at Nike Nationals

BOSTON -- Clear Spring junior Paige Shirk, a three-time Maryland Class 1A state champion, placed eighth in the girls shot put at Nike Indoor Nationals on Sunday.

Shirk's best throw of 39 feet, 11 1/4 inches came on her sixth and final attempt. She set the 1A state record at 41-4 1/2 last month.

Boonsboro senior Scott Rice -- the Washington County record holder in the pole vault at 14-3 1/4 -- tied for 23rd in the event Saturday with a jump of 13-8 1/2.

The top six in each event earned All-American honors.


HCC 18, Shenandoah 9

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Matt Greene had five hits, including a home run and a double, and six RBIs to lead Hagerstown Community College past Shenandoah University.


Daniel Heatwole had four of HCC's 22 hits and two RBIs. Kameron Armacost had three hits and two RBIs for the Hawks (10-5), while Adam Brunk had two hits and an RBI and John Barrett added two hits.


HCC goes 2-1

WALDORF, Md. -- The Hagerstown Community College softball team went 2-1 Saturday at the Tommy Morrison Invitational, hosted by the College of Southern Maryland.

The Hawks lost their first game to Catonsville, 7-2. Christina Mehaffie went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Megan Holmes had a pair of doubles.

HCC rebounded with a win over Monroe (N.Y.), 6-3. Emily Myers had two hits and two RBIs and Holmes drove in two runs.

The Hawks (2-1) closed out the day with a 15-8 win over Cecil. Holmes hit a two-run homer in the first, while Jess Patey, Amanda Waltman and Lashawn Tolson each had two hits. Tolson drove in four runs.
