Bridge of Life church church offers free movies

March 15, 2009|By TIM SHEA

HAGERSTOWN -- A downtown Hagerstown church is playing a role in bringing entertainment to the city's Arts and Entertainment District.

Bridge of Life church at 14 S. Potomac St. has been offering free movies every other Saturday night since January.

"We're trying to appeal to families with family-friendly movies," said Terry King, lead pastor at Bridge of Life. "Everyone seems to like it, young and old. We're a church, so we're not going to offer anything that is offensive."

The movies are shown on a big screen in Bridge of Life's renovated theater, King said. He said the movies also have theater-quality sound, even though the theater's sound system is "designed more for live concerts than movies."

The movies are on DVD and have been released within the last several years, King said. He declined to give any names of movies due to licensing issues.

King said those interested in finding out what movies are playing can call the church at 301-791-1674. Calls will be returned if no one is available to answer the phone.

King said it hasn't been hard to find family-friendly movies, and the church is considering offering a series of classic movies.

The movie isn't the only freebie that moviegoers will get on Saturday nights.

"We also offer free sodas and popcorn, and we offer a safe environment," King said. "Some people can't afford to go to the (larger) theaters."

The theater has a capacity of about 450, but has drawn much less than that on movie nights so far, King said.

King said the church is offering the movies not only to appeal to customers but to be part of downtown Hagerstown's revitalization efforts.

"We have a good location right in the heart of the Arts and Entertainment District," King said. "The bottom line is we're trying to serve the community in general and downtown in particular. We want to give people a reason to come downtown."

King, 57, has been lead pastor at Bridge of Life for two years. He also was lead pastor at the church from 1972 to 1983, when it was known as Faith Chapel.

King's wife of 37 years, Linda, is the church's office administrator. The couple has two sons, Philip, 33, and Jonathan, 32.
