FROSTBURG, Md. - Jessica Clingan, a 2004 graduate of Williamsport High School, graduated Dec. 20 from Frostburg State University with a bachelor of science degree in physical education and health.

She completed her degree cum laude with a 3.52 grade-point average.

Jess was a four-year member of Frostburg's indoor and outdoor track team, where she participated in all hurdles events. Jess also received honors as Outstanding Female Athlete for both the indoor and the outdoor season at the Mason-Dixon Championship Conference in 2007. Jess holds the indoor record at FSU for the 300 meters at 41.10 in 2006, the 600 meters at 1.46.7 in 2006 and as part of the 4-by-200 meters at 1.46.26 for 2006. During 2006, she received Academic All-American Track and Field honors.

She is a member of the Maryland Association of Physical Education & Health Department and served as a representative for FSU during the conference. She was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and served as president of the Student Athletic Advisory Council. She was also a member of the Health and PE Club.

Jess is employed by Washington County Public Schools as a substitute teacher and at South Pointe Fitness Center. She recently participated in a three-day conference to receive her personal trainer certification and she is also certified as a water safety instructor.

Jess is the daughter of James and Jo Clingan of Waynesboro, Pa., and Dawn and Tim Smith of Williamsport. She is the granddaughter of Frances and Curtis Ausherman of Williamsport.




COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Kate Zimmer of Hagerstown has been named to the honors program's dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Maryland, College Park. She has a double major in government/politics and history.

She also received honors from the Department of Government and Politics and has been selected for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the Primannum Honor Society and Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Honor Society.

She is a 2008 graduate of the North Hagerstown High School International Baccaulaureate program. She is the daughter of Chip and Barbara Zimmer of Hagerstown.




CUMBERLAND, Md. - The Allegany College of Maryland Foundation has announced the awarding of scholarships to the following area students for study in the 2008-09 academic year:

Philip Brown of Hagerstown received the Maryland Forestry Board's Scholarship. A forestry major, he studied one year at Hagerstown Community College after his 2006 graduation from Williamsport High School. His work experience includes Dick's Sporting Goods and Kennedy Fire Protection. He is the son of Greg and Tammy Brown.

Tonya Sornson of Hancock received the John Mash Memorial Forestry Scholarship. A forestry major, she previously studied at Northern Virginia Community College. A 1996 C.D. Hylton High School graduate, she has worked as an optician. She is married to Eric Sornson.

Devan Wallizer of Little Orleans received the Bowler Inc. Scholarship. She is a human service associate major. A 2008 graduate of Hancock Middle/Senior High School, she has worked at Pizza Hut in Hancock. She is the daughter of D. Patrick and Donna Wallizer.




TOWSON, Md. - Jonathan Hose of Hagerstown graduated from Towson University in January with a bachelor of science degree in sport management and a minor in business administration.

He is a 2004 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

He is the son of Rick and Debbie Hose.




HARRISONBURG, Va. - Sarah Beth Pryor of Greencastle, Pa., has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at James Madison University.

Sarah, a sophomore, is majoring in marketing and corporate communications. She is a 2007 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

She is the daughter of Bill and Diane Pryor.

To qualify for the dean's list, a student must carry a semester course load of 12 credit hours or more and earn a grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.899.




RADFORD, Va. - Kate Russell DeLoach of Myersville, Md., graduated from Radford University at the end of the fall semester.

DeLoach, the daughter of Stephen DeLoach, earned a bachelor of science degree in recreation, parks and tourism.




STAUNTON, Va. - Hannah Reed Vargason of Sharpsburg has been named to the honors list for the fall semester at Mary Baldwin College.

She is the daughter of Charles and Natoma Vargason.




FROSTBURG, Md. - Lindsey Fouke of Hagerstown has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Frostburg State University.

In addition, Lindsey received the distinction of a 4.0 grade-point average.

To be eligible for the dean's list, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours and earn a cumulative semester grade-point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.




COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Gretchen Downey, a conservation biology major at the University of Maryland, College Park, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester.

In addition, she earned a 4.0 grade-point average.

She is a 2008 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

She is the daughter of Tom and Suzanne Downey.
