Marine Corps Pvt. Kristopher A. Heckman, son of Terry L. and Julie Heckman and brother to Katelyn and Bryant of Mercersburg, Pa., recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

After completing 29 days of military combat training at Camp Geiger, N.C, Heckman is stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., receiving his training as a motor transportation operator.

Heckman is a 2008 graduate of James Buchanan High School.




Air Force Airman Sucora W. Chestnut, daughter of Wendell and Sheila Chestnut of Hagerstown, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Chestnut is a 2001 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick, Md.




Air Force Airman Cathrina J. Alarcon, daughter of Brenda Woefel of Mantle Court, Thurmont, Md., graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Alarcon is a 2005 graduate of Frederick (Md.) High School.




Air Force Airman Christopher K. Fox, son of Richard and Margot Fox of Frederick, Md., graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Fox is a 2008 graduate of Tuscarora High School, Frederick.




Civilian Crystal M. Bumbaugh, a 2007 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg, Pa., recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Bumbaugh will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.




Navy Seaman Apprentice David M. Lopez, a 2001 graduate of Chambersburg Area High School, Chambersburg, Pa., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.




Civilian Travis M. Gerhart, son of Betty J. Reed of St. Thomas, Pa., recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Gerhart will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy's Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.




The following area National Guard members participated in the 56th presidential inauguration Jan. 20 as part of the largest ever contingent of National Guard members to serve in Washington, D.C.:

o Army National Guard Sgt. Jeremy E. Baughman, son of Ed H. and Linda K. Baughman of Hagerstown.

Baughman is a mechanic with 17 years of military service.

His wife, Lori, is the daughter of Rob Downin, and Pam Downin, both of Falling Waters, W.Va.

Baughman graduated in 1992 from North Hagerstown High School.

o Army National Guard Sgt. Timothy A. Bonds.

Bonds, an automated equipment specialist, is a member of the 729th Brigade Support Battalion based in Hagerstown. The guard member has served in the military for 18 years.

Bonds graduated in 1985 from North Hagerstown High School and received an associate degree in 2005 from Hagerstown Business College.

o Army National Guard Pfc. Richard L. Riggs, son of Lisa Cronise of Boonsboro.

Riggs, a military police officer, is a member of the 58th Special Troops Battalion based in Hagerstown. The guard member has served in the military for two years.

Riggs graduated in 2008 from Boonsboro High School.

o Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Anthony Rinaldi.

Rinaldi, a general supply sergeant, is a member of the 729th Brigade Support Battalion based in Reisterstown, Md. The guard member has served in the military for 17 years.

Rinaldi graduated in 1985 from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School, Frederick, Md.

o Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Felicia L. Nichols, daughter of Denise Cobb of Frederick, Md.

Nichols is a heating, cooling, refrigeration and ventilation apprentice.

o Air National Guard 2nd Lt. Jerry W. Whitmore, son of Ralph and Lillian Whitmore of Knoxville, Md.

Whitmore, a protocol officer, is a member of the 175th Force Support Squadron based in Baltimore.

Whitmore graduated in 1991 from Brunswick (Md.) High School, and received an associate degree in 1996 from Frederick (Md.) Community College. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2004 from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md.

o Army National Guard Spec. Anthony L. Robinson, son of Marvin E. Robinson of Hagerstown, and Phyllis Kauffman of State Line, Pa.,

Robinson, a Blackhawk crew specialist, is a member of the 224th Aviation based in Edgewood, Md., and has served in the military for 13 years.

Robinson graduated in 1979 from Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School, Greencastle, Pa.

o Army National Guard Pfc. Wade J. Cline, son of Daria E, Korrell and stepson of Rodney G. Lewis, both of Smithsburg.

Cline is a radio operator and maintainer with the Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment based in Dundalk, Md.

Cline graduated in 2007 from Middletown High School, Middletown, Md.

o Army National Guard Sgt. Jose Salamanca, son of Ivan and Tatiana King of Mount Airy, Md.

Salamanca is a light-wheeled vehicle mechanic with the 128th Brigade Support Battalion based in Dundalk, Md.

Salamanca graduated in 2005 from Damascus (Md.) High School.
