GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Harold R. "Harry" Ambrose, 77, of 395 Catharine St., died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born May 21, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Oscar C. and Beatrice Philpott Ambrose.

He attended Greencastle High School.

He was a retired Army Chief Warrant Officer II, having served two tours in Vietnam, one tour in Korea and a tour in Germany. He received the Bronze Star and National Defense Medals, among others.

He also worked at Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, Pa., and last at Fort Ritchie.

He was a member of Greencastle Baptist Church.

He was a member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 of Greencastle and the Retired Officers Association.

He was a former coach of the Greencastle American Legion baseball team.

He is survived by his wife, Eliane E. Lebraux Ambrose, whom he married Sept. 2, 1953; three daughters, Shirley Keller of Hagerstown, Elaine Ambrose of Stafford, Va., and Sandy Poffenberger of Williamsport; three sons, Gary Ambrose and Steve Ambrose, both of Greencastle, and Robert Ambrose of Frederick, Md.; one sister, Betty Robinson of Lewistown, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Swisher; and two brothers, Beauford Ambrose and Virgil Ambrose.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home in Greencastle. Pastor Stephen Myshrall will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, with military graveside honors by the Chambersburg VFW Post 1599.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Greencastle VFW Post will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
