Area Roundup -- Dees wins at Speedway

March 14, 2009

Roy Deese Jr. opened his racing season with a late model victory on Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway in the second race of the program.

Matt Sheppard scored a victory in the small block modified feature that guaranteed a starting spot in the Octoberfest.

Deese, of Laurel, Md., was second through five laps before he overtook Jared Miley on the 20th lap, going on to win by 1.79 seconds.

Brett Hearn took the lead on the first lap of the small block feature but Sheppard soon took command and led the remainder of the way, beating out Shawn Merkel by 2.06 seconds.

The Speedway is idle for racing Saturday and returns March 28 with the Super DIRT Series.
