School bus crash injures 4

March 12, 2009|By JENNIFER FITCH

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Four children were taken to Chambersburg Hospital on Thursday morning after a school bus accident at 147 Industrial Drive.

The children were on Bus 55, owned by Bricker Transportation Co., as it made its way to South Hamilton Elementary School.

The bus hit a utility pole at 7:46 a.m., causing what hospital officials described as minor injuries.

All four children were released from the hospital by 1 p.m., although one girl still required treatment for a broken jaw. One injured student went to school after being released from the hospital, said Chambersburg Area School District spokeswoman Sylvia Rockwood.

The accident occurred near Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School, she said.

Parents were notified, and two representatives of the district joined families at Chambersburg Hospital, Rockwood said.

The driver -- Vivian H. Myers, 73, of Chambersburg -- was uninjured. Only four children were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Chambersburg police said the bus crossed a lane of traffic and hit the pole on the south side.

Thursday's accident was the second in less than a month in the Chambersburg Area School District. On Feb. 25, Jeffery Lynn Kriner was driving an Allegheny Power truck that rear-ended a bus in the 3300 block of Mont Alto Road in Guilford Township.

Pennsylvania State Police investigated that accident and charged Kriner with careless driving, not stopping for a school bus's lights, and driving at a speed that is not "reasonable or prudent" in the circumstances.

In 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available, Pennsylvania had 446 accidents involving school buses, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
