MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Ray C. Hege, 88, of 8027 Charlestown Road, died Monday, March 9, 2009, in Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born May 8, 1920, in Welsh Run, Pa., he was the son of the late John Calvin and Rhoda Shoemaker Hege.

He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of Greencastle Church of the Brethren and of the Berean Sunday school class.

In his earlier years, he was a member of Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, served as a forest firefighter and was a member of Shining Light Youth Group of the Greencastle area.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Orvetta Harnish Hege; two daughters, Orvetta M. Monn of Mercersburg and Susan M. Horst of Chambersburg; one son, William J. Hege of Mercersburg; two sisters, Mildred Hege of Mercersburg and Grace Martynenko of Philadelphia; one brother, George Hege of Toms River, N.J.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary H. Helman; and three brothers, John C. Hege, Harry Hege and Samuel Hege.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Greencastle Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Leon Yoder will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Church of the Brethren Cemetery near Welsh Run, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
