Area Roundup -- Cromer throws no-hitter for Hawks in Florida

COCOA, Fla. -- Spencer Cromer pitched a no-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as Hagerstown Community College beat UConn Avery Point 3-0 at the Cocoa Expo on Wednesday.

Charles Johnson drove in all the runs for the Hawks (8-4), hitting a three-run triple with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.

Earlier in the day, HCC fell 9-3 to Nassau. Hawks relievers Craig Haupt and John Byram combined for eight strikeouts over the final 5 2/3 innings, while allowing only one earned run.

Shepherd 5-5, W.Va. Wesleyan 4-4

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Drew McCormick belted a walk-off two-run home run in the seventh inning of the nightcap to help Shepherd University sweep West Virginia Wesleyan at Fairfax Field.

In the opener, Tyler Beard, a Williamsport graduate, led off the seventh with a double and scored on an error to give the Rams (8-6) a victory. Jefferson graduate Brian Collins doubled, homered and drove in two.

In the nightcap, Waynesboro graduate Nathan Minnick went 3-for-4 with a solo homer for the Rams. Musselman graduate Mark Darlington hit a three-run homer for Wesleyan (5-9).

Kenny Reisinger pitched two hitless seventh innings to earn the win in both games for Shepherd.

West End LL tryouts

Registration and tryouts for West End Little League will be held Saturday at Hellane Park in Hagerstown. Tryouts for 9-year-olds will begin at noon, followed by 10-year-olds at 1 p.m. and 11- and 12-year-olds at 2. Second tryouts for 9-year-olds are Monday at 5 p.m., 10-year-olds are Tuesday at 5 and 11- and 12-year-olds are Wednesday at 5.

Football tryouts

Open tryouts for the Chambersburg Cardinals adult football team will be held Saturday at noon at Chambersburg Middle School. Cost is $25 for all new players.
