INWOOD, W.Va. -- Walter L. West, 89, of Inwood, died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Thomas and Leticia Doty West.

His wife, Beatrice Dickens Brown West, preceded him in death.

He graduated from Plainfield High School in New Jersey. He completed engineering studies at the Newark College of Engineering and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from the National Fisheries Center in Leetown, W.Va.

He was a 32nd degree mason and past master of Triluminar Masonic Lodge No. 117 in Middleway, W.Va. He also was a member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, a past high priest in Bethesda Chapter No. 16, Royal Arch Masons, an anointed high priest of the Grand Convention of West Virginia and a member of Potomac Commandry No. 5 Knights Templar.


He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Cheeks of Bentonville, Va., and Linda Bates of Tulsa, Okla.; one son, Don West of Kearneysville, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, William Lawrence West; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, Dr. Harold West.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Middleway. The Rev. John Alfriend will officiate. Masonic graveside services will be in Middleway Masonic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Triluminar Masonic Lodge No. 117, Building Fund, c/o Robert A. Gruber, 382 Grubertown Lane, Summit Point, WV 25446.
