DUNDALK, Md. - Joseph Resh Hoffman Sr., 94, of Dundalk, and formerly of Great Cacapon, W.Va., died Friday, March 6, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Rehab & Extended Care Center in Baltimore.

Born July 27, 1914, in Parkton, Md., he was the son of the late William L. and Annie F. Pergoy Hoffman.

His wife, Mildred Grace Light Hoffman, died July 22, 1991.

He was a graduate of Sparks (Md.) High School.

He retired after 42 years of service as a machine shop manager with Black & Decker in Baltimore and Hampstead, Md.


He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a Methodist.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, all in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Ann Chapman of Plyesville, Md.; one son, Joseph R. Hoffman Jr. of Hampstead; two stepdaughters, Nancy L. Lang of Dundalk and Faye England of Finksburg, Md.; one stepson, George England of Florida; two grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one stepson, William England; eight sisters, Melvana Hoffman, Josephine Holloway, Cora Hale, Ruth Hale, Edith Mullingneaux, Rachel Freeland, Lynde P. Hoffman and Janet L. Freeman; and six brothers, George Hoffman, John Hoffman, Dennis Hoffman, Eugene Hoffman, Paul Hoffman and William R. Hoffman.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Daniel L. Montague III will officiate. Burial with graveside military honors conducted by Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Greenway Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
