Musselman moves on to states

March 10, 2009

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- Musselman made the most of its opportunity with the revised West Virginia tournament brackets.

After losing last Friday to Martinsburg, the Applemen still had a shot at a state tournament berth with a three-hour trip to go against R.C. Byrd in one of two Region II finals on Tuesday night.

Guard Derek Brown drained a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to give the Applemen a 47-46 victory over Byrd and secure a spot in Charleston next week, thereby joining Martinsburg in the eight-team Class AAA field.

"It was unbelievable," said Musselman coach Derek Basile. "(Brown) had a good look, (Byrd) was packing it in and he took the shot."

R.C. Byrd (15-9) had two close-in shot opportunities to win the game.

Musselman (19-6) led by as much as 10 points in the first half and 32-25 at the break and trailed 40-36 after three periods after R.C. Byrd changed to a box-and-1 defense.

"It was a struggle, but we're happy as can be," said Basile.

Musselman will be making its first trip to Charleston as a Class AAA school.
