Post 211 oratorical contest winners named

FUNKSTOWN - Dixon-Troxell Post 211 has announced the winners of the American Legion oratorical scholarship program.

Keith Sandell of Grace Academy took first place, Abdul Latif of Smithsburg High School took second place and Kyle Toms of South Hagerstown High School placed third.

Richard Shipley, post commander and Carroll Gatling, third vice commander and contest chairman, announced the winners of the contest recently.

A senior, Sandell's topic was "By the Consent of the People." For his effort on the post level Feb. 5, he won $300.

A week after winning the post competition, Sandell placed second at the Washington County Council of the American Legion level.

First place on the Washington County level was won by Ian Karraker, a 10th-grader at Boonsboro High School. His topic was "The Role of the Preamble in Modern Society."
