Fire near truck stop lot destroys 4 acres

HUYETTS -- Firefighters spent about two hours on the scene of a fire Monday near the parking lot of the Pilot Truck Stop on Md. 63 in Huyetts, Lt. Donnie Bingaman of the Williamsport Fire Department said.

The fire started around noon and destroyed about four acres of vegetation, Bingaman said. The cause is unknown at this point.

Bingaman said high winds on Monday blew the fire away from the fuel pumps at the truck stop.

Fire departments from Clear Spring, Halfway, Maugansville and Funkstown assisted at the scene, Bingaman said.

Man, juvenile face drug, weapon charges in Frederick Co.

FREDERICK, Md. -- A Mt. Airy, Md. man and a New Market, Md. juvenile were charged after a Frederick County Sheriff's deputy responded to Wood Thrush Drive Saturday night after a citizen heard a gunshot, said a news release from the sheriff's department.

Christopher M. Hines, 18, was charged with destruction of property, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and use of a weapon as a separate crime, the release said.

The juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Justice on similar charges, the release said.

The sheriff's department responded to Wood Thrush Drive at 7 p.m. and the juvenile was found to be in possession of a bullet, the release said.

Three handguns, two of which were loaded, several stolen vehicle registration tags and suspected marijuana were found in the vehicle, the release said.

An investigation showed one of the guns was fired in a residence on Wood Thrush Drive, possibly accidentally, the release said.
