Area Roundup -- Heatwole's hits hugely help Hawks

COCOA, Fla. -- Daniel Heatwole's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Hagerstown Community College a 7-6 victory over Miami Hamilton as the Hawks swept two games Sunday at the Cocoa Expo.

Heatwole's RBI single in the sixth helped the Hawks (5-3) close within 6-5. In the seventh, Adam Brunk walked and Neal Callahan was hit by a pitch. Kameron Armacost, who ran for Callahan, pulled off a double-steal with Brunk. Justin Everhart walked before Heatwole hit a 1-2 pitch to give Hagerstown the win.

Tai Sidler had two hits and two RBIs, and Matt Greene had two hits for the Hawks.

In HCC's first game Sunday, Greene had two hits and three RBIs, and Kyle Briggs pitched five solid innings, striking out seven in a 12-4 victory over Sauk Valley. Heatwole hit a two-run double and Brunk had two hits for the Hawks.

Smith shines for Longwood

OREM, Utah -- Williamsport graduate Morgan Smith had 13 points and five rebounds as Longwood University (8-21) capped its season with a 76-60 victory over Savannah State on Saturday.

Thompson, Rhoderick honored

FREDERICK, Md. -- Cara Thompson finished her stay at Hagerstown Community College with a pair of honors on Sunday.

Thompson, a North Hagerstown graduate, was nominated for the NJCAA All-American team after being named to the All-Region XX team for the season. She averaged 15.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Hawks (18-12).

Sophomore center Amy Rhoderick was named to the All-Region XX tournament team. She had 12 points, 21rebounds and nine blocks in two games.
