CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - J. Thomas Smith, 69, of 625 Devon Drive, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at his home.

Born Feb. 24, 1940, in Portsmouth, Va., he was the son of the late Clifford Vincent and Helen Rose Denning Smith.

He was employed as a communications field engineer with NASA from 1965 until retiring in 1997.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 600.

He was the founding president of the Auxiliary at the Village of Laurel Run, where he volunteered.

He is survived by his wife, Carole L. Kohut Smith, whom he married June 11, 1966; two sons, Matthew T. Smith of Bel Air, Md., and Mark V. Smith of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Helen M. Nelson and Cynthia Pauler, both of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, William H. Smith of Hernando Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Sonny Smith, Gardy Smith and Stanley Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church in Chambersburg.

Burial will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery, St. Mary's City, Md., with military honors.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg.
