SEMS responds to 82 calls

For the month of February, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) responded to 82 calls for service, bringing the 2009 total to 189 calls.

There were 10 responses within Smithsburg town limits and 12 responses to the Leitersburg and Ringgold areas. There were five calls each to the Mount Aetna and Cascade/Pen Mar areas.

Mutual aid calls to neighboring counties included 11 to Frederick County, Md., four to Franklin County, Pa., and one to Berkeley County, W.Va. Another five calls were to the Hagerstown area and two were to Boonsboro.

SEMS took 54 patients to area hospitals in February.

Assistance was provided on four fire calls, according to James Ulrich, assistant chief. SEMS also sent seven people to assist with the evacuation of residents from the Heartland of Martinsburg nursing home due to an electrical fire.

Three standby crews were sent to neighboring stations to assist during periods of high call volume/significant incidents - once to Thurmont (Md.) Community Ambulance and twice to Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue.
