HCC at Nationals

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Hagerstown Community College's Dustin Adams finished 13th in the men's 5,000-meter run in 16 minutes, 13.30 seconds during the first day of competition Friday at the NJCAA Indoor Track Championships at Texas Tech University.

Elizabeth Ross finished 16th in the women's shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 8 3/4 inches for the Hawks. Samantha Valiton finished 18th in the women's 600 in 1:59.13.

Justin Cole and Mike Podlesnik were scheduled to run in the men's 1,000-meter prelims Friday night. Results were not available at press time.

Jordan Atha will run in the women's mile today.

Two local players help C-M

PITTSBURGH -- James Buchanan graduate Shane Rife and St. Maria Goretti grad John Duhring are members of the Carnegie-Mellon University basketball team that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament.

Rife, a sophomore, averaged 9.8 points and four rebounds a game for Carnegie-Mellon (19-6), who met Brockport State on Friday in the opening round at John Carroll University. Duhring, a freshman, has contributed 1.7 and 1.3 rebounds in 19 games.

Chambers gets mention

CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Former St. Maria Goretti standout Andrew Chambers earned special mention honors in the Centennial Conference this season playing for Washington College.

A junior, Chambers averaged 10.6 points and 4.5 rebounds for Washington.

Spierenburg in playoffs

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Joe Spierenburg, a former St. Maria Goretti star and now a senior at Gettysburg College, once again visited postseason play as the Bullets qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament after winning the Centennial Conference tournament.

Spierenburg is Gettysburg's career leader in blocked shots and recently notched his 300th block. He is averaging 5.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Gettysburg lost to The College of Wooster on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

YOUTH BASKETBALL



Middle school league finals

The championship games for the Washington County Middle School Boys Basketball League will be played today at Broadfording Christian Academy.

The sixth-grade final between Northern and Clear Spring will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the seventh-grade final (Northern vs. Smithsburg) at 10:30 and the eighth-grade final (Northern vs. Boonsboro) at noon.

Foul-shooting and 3-point shooting competitions will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the seventh-grade showcase game at 2:45 and the eighth-grade showcase game at 4.
