Walter Willson O'Connell, 99, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Coffman Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1909, in Montgomery, Ala., he was the son of the late John Charles O'Connell and the late Mary Julia Willson O'Connell.

His wife, Evelyn Louise Cannon O'Connell, preceded him in death in 1982.

He attended Mount St. Mary's College. He was a salesman for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church since 1912, where he ushered.

He was also a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society. He was a past president of the Blue and Gray Model T Club of America and member of the Antique Automobile Club of America.


He is survived by two sons, Walter Willson O'Connell II and wife, Patti, of Short Hills, N.J., and Daniel Michael O'Connell and wife, Diane, of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Frances O'Connell and Mary Lucia Wood, and one brother, John Charles O'Connell II.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 9, 2009, at 10 a.m. from the St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Father Colin Poston officiating.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 8. Rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740 or to a charity of one's choice.
