Williamsport recount set for Friday

March 04, 2009|By HEATHER KEELS

WILLIAMSPORT -- A recount of the ballots from Williamsport's election Monday is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m., mayoral candidate Jeffrey A. Cline said.

Cline and his two running mates requested the recount after losing all three races by fewer than 20 votes each. Incumbent Mayor James G. McCleaf was re-elected by a 12-vote margin and McCleaf's running mate for assistant mayor, Anthony T. Drury, beat Cline's assistant mayor candidate by 17 votes. Cline's candidate for town council missed winning a seat by 13 votes.

Cline said he wrote a letter to the town's election supervisor, requesting a recount because of the closeness of the race and the fact that the vote-counting process took almost four hours and came at the end of a long day, creating a potential for errors due to fatigue.

Cline also protested that when his party's election observer took ill, no replacement observer was permitted, although four potential observers were waiting in the parking lot outside the poll.

Cline said he and his running mates, Earle R. Pereschuk and Bobbi Cole, would reimburse the town for the cost of compensating poll workers for the recount.
