Woman pleads guilty to prostitution

March 03, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 33-year-old woman charged with one count of solicitation of prostitution and a felony county of animal cruelty in November 2008 resolved one of the charges in magistrate court on Tuesday.

Breshannon L. Deveraux entered a guilty plea to the prostitution charge. She was credited for serving 105 days in jail and no additional sentence was added, Berkeley County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Harvey said.

Deveraux, who was still incarcerated at Eastern Regional Jail Tuesday evening, also was ordered to pay a $50 fine and $159.59 in court costs, Harvey said.

She could have been sentenced to up to six months in jail on the prostitution charge, according to state code.

Deveraux waived her right to a preliminary hearing in magistrate court on the animal cruelty charge last month, according to court records.

Deveraux has been incarcerated at Eastern Regional Jail since Nov. 18, when she was arrested on the prostitution charge. On Nov. 12, police found a pit bull with open wounds and ribs showing chained in the attic of the East Burke Street home that has been listed as her address in court records. The dog has recovered after receiving medical care and has been adopted, officials have said.
