WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Stephen R. "Steve" Stitely, 62, of 11534 Old Forge Road, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at his home.

Born Jan. 13, 1947, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late E. Richard Stitely and Virginia Isabell Greenawalt Stitely Pittman.

He was a 1965 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. He was the first basketball player to hit 1,000 points for the school district and was awarded the Tradition Award from the high school. He attended Bridgewater (Va.) College for two years.


He was employed by Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove, Pa., and then was transferred to the plant in Conway, S.C., as the manager of manufacturing engineers from 1975 to 1985.

He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of National AARP, Sunshine Lanes Bowling League, Waynesboro, had been a member of Penn National Golf Club, Fayetteville, Pa., and Waynesboro Country Club. He was a four-time club champion at Penn National Golf Club, Fayetteville, and won the Beaver Creek Golf Club Companion as a guest. He also had two holes in one in his golfing career.

He is survived by his wife, Judith M. Johanson Stitely, whom he married Oct. 8, 1994; two daughters, Shelley R. Stitely Null of Conway, S.C., and Shianne R. Stitely of Waynesboro; one son, Stephen R. Stitely of Greencastle, Pa.; one stepson, Erik K. Johanson of Pine Grove, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles Wayne Pittman.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Amy Messler will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
