Samuel Robert Fowler Jr. died March 1, 2009, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Philadelphia, Pa.

He is the husband of Cletis Anne Fowler.

Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Frederick, Md., he is the son of the late Samuel R. and Kathleene R. Kolb Fowler.

Mr. Fowler was a 1950 graduate of Saint James School, St. James, Md., and of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., class of 1954.

Mr. Fowler served in the United States Air Force for 28 years, retiring in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1982 at the rank of colonel. Among his awards were the Bronze Star medal and the Legion of Merit.


He subsequently was a real estate broker in both Colorado Springs and in Frederick, where last he was the computer administrator on the staff of the Board of Realtors. He later was the business manager at the Bishop Clagget Conference Center until he retired in 1998.

He served on the Saint James School Alumni Council from 1993 until 1999. He was the 2001 recipient of the Saint James School Alumni Award for Distinguished Service and Dedication to the school. He returned to the Alumni Council in 2001 and served until 2007.

Mr. Fowler was a member of the General Society of the War of 1812 and of the Order of the First Families of Virginia.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fowler is survived by his six children of a previous marriage, Caryl F. Wallin of Tuscon, Ariz., Kathleene M. Keidel of Buena Vista, Colo., Jennifer F. Liebowitz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Samuel R. Fowler III of Albuquerque, N.M., Laura Reis of Danville, Calif., and Christopher T. Fowler of Cranston, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 5, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Saint James School for members of the family and friends with the Rev. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan, headmaster Saint James School, officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.

A reception for all will be held at 4 p.m. at Saint James School.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Fowler's name to Saint James School, St. James, Md. There will be no viewing.
