Sign of spring?

March 02, 2009

"Two dozen ring-neck pheasants circle our house daily," reader Mike Timmer of Boonsboro said in an e-mail.

"A few years ago, I first heard a ringtail rooster 'squacking' in the farmer's field behind our house. I knew the distinct sound from growing up in Minnesota, and hunting them in my youth. Later that year I began seeing a couple here and there scurrying along the edges of yards. They fly, but prefer to run ... and they can almost outrun our dog!

"Each year I've seen more and more of them, and they are getting more brave. This year, recently, six roosters and about 20 hens come out of the field and circled around ours and our neighbors' house looking for food. They come right up onto the front porch."
