PHILADELPHIA - Bernice Anna Burrell, 83, of Philadelphia, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009.

Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Anna Mae Cook. After her mother's early death, she was raised by her grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Burrell.

She graduated from Sumner Ramer School in Martinsburg and attended Storer College in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

She retired from Latham Hotel, where she worked for 30 years.

She is survived by six children, Alisha Johnson of Martinsburg, and Shirley Bell, Barbara Green, Eric Green, Jacqueline Burrell and Alvin Holland, all of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one niece; and two cousins.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Regina Thomas; and one brother, Charles Cook.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Johnny Green will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.


The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
