Garrett puts a wrap on Hawks' season

The semifinal round of the Region XX Division I men's basketball tournament continues to be a curse for the Hagerstown Community College Hawks.

They were once again eliminated in that round by the Garrett Lakers for the seventh straight year on Saturday night, 94-86 at the HCC athletic complex.

Six of those seven losses have come to Garrett. The other loss came to Allegany in 2007.

The last time the Hawks won in the semifinals was in 2002 -- Jim Brown's final season as coach.

"We had a good year," Hawks coach Earl Redden said. "We just didn't come out on the right end of this one. It is hard to beat a team three times in one year. Garrett is a good team that is well-coached. They kept the game at their tempo. They kept us from running. We were never really able to get into our offense. We just had some shots that didn't fall down. We didn't take care of the basketball."

Second-seeded HCC finished the season 21-9.

Francis Gunn fired in 28 points, Rodney Clark had 24 and Brian Koonce added 17 points for third-seeded Garrett (20-8).

"The key to our victory was taking away their 3-point shots," Garrett coach Dennis Gibson said. "The bottom line is that our kids came out and played with a lot of intensity. ... It just seemed like we did the necessary things that we had to do to win. We got the rebounds when we needed them. We made some clutch foul shots. We played great defense tonight."

Jordan Brooks pumped in 22 points, Amaurys Fermin had 17 points and seven assists, Raason Young had 16 points, Isaiah Hill added 12 points and Brandon Rascoe had seven rebounds for HCC.

Garrett raced to a 31-21 lead with 7:24 remaining in the first half. HCC came back to go ahead 34-33 with 3:14 to go in the half, but that was the Hawks' last lead of the game.

Garrett held a 42-38 advantage at halftime and extended it to 65-57 with 10:27 left in the second half.

The Hawks cut the lead down to 71-70 with 7:29 remaining, but did not get any closer than that as the Lakers outscored the Hawks 23-16 the rest of the way.

Garrett will square off against top-seeded Allegany today at 3 p.m., in the Division I championship game. Allegany beat fifth-seeded Frederick 95-70 on Saturday.

The Division II championship game will be played at 1 p.m., between top-seeded Cecil and sixth-seeded Howard.
