Validation earned in West battle

February 28, 2009|By ANDREW MASON

THURMONT, Md. -- While Smithsburg's Dean White and Boonsboro's Jon Best both won titles at last weekend's Washington County Wrestling Tournament, they each needed a victory Friday night to validate their county supremacy.

In the quarterfinals of the Maryland Class 2A-1A West region championships at Catoctin High School, White defeated North Hagerstown's Kevin Mothershed 9-5 at 140 pounds, while Best got the best of Smithsburg's Jeb Slick in an 11-6 decision at 171.

Mothershed and Slick were both No. 1 seeds at the county tourney. But both were upset in the semifinals, seemingly making the title matches a little easier for White and Best, who were on the opposite ends of the brackets.

"At counties, I beat everybody else but (Mothershed)," White said. "He's a tough wrestler, but I wanted it pretty bad tonight."

Best avenged a 16-9 loss to Slick earlier this season.

"It was a rematch of the dual meet," said Best, who never trailed Friday. "At the county tournament, I thought it was going to be me and him. So I was really happy when I found out I was going to face him here."

The double-elimination region tournament continues today, beginning with the championship semifinals at 10 a.m. The consolation quarterfinals are at noon, the consolation semifinals at 1:30, the consolation finals at 4 and the championship finals at 6:30.

The top four in each weight class advance to next weekend's state tournament.

Of the 29 Washington County wrestlers who qualified for the region tourney, 10 won Friday to remain in the title hunt.

Joining White and Best in the semis are North's Michael Leonard (145); Smithsburg's Monica Hovermale (103) and Tyler Scott (189); South Hagerstown's Ian Anderson (145); and Williamsport's Kemper Baker (119), Joey Sutch (135), Robbie Mies (215) and Matt Cody (285).

Leonard's victory was the most thrilling. He took down Middletown's Russell Berger with 5 seconds left in sudden-death overtime to win, 7-5. Leonard also went to overtime in the county finals, losing 14-9 to Anderson.

"I had to redeem myself. I just wanted it so bad," Leonard said. "I'm ready for whoever wants to come at me. I've been working so hard, I just want to show what I can do."

Baker's quarterfinal bout against Boonsboro's Joseph Minoglio was a rematch of last weekend's county final, as was Mies' bout against Smithsburg's Joey Vorce. And the results were the same, as both top-seeded Wildcats scored pins again.

Scott, the county's other No. 1 seed, pinned Walkersville's Clinton Holly in 1:39.

Sutch, who placed seventh at 119 for St. James at the Maryland Independent Schools state tournament last year, said he was nervous about his region debut with Williamsport.

"It feels good to get that first match out of the way," said Sutch, who beat South Carroll's Alec Stavish 16-6. "I got the jitters out."

County champ Williamsport begins today in third place out of 19 teams.

"We've got four going to the semis. Hopefully we can put all four in the finals," Williamsport coach Mike Rechtorovic said. "There's a lot of wrestling left."
